The river that named a town
Tel Tammer sits on the eastern bank of the Khabur, where irrigation made a market town possible.
The Khabur is not a postcard river. It is work: irrigation, mud, a cool strip of air in a hot month. Tel Tammer grew beside it as a market and a cluster of houses that faced both the water and the road.
People who left still give directions by the river. They remember which bank held which garden, which crossing was shorter after rain, which willows were safe for children. The archive will collect those maps before they thin into general memory.
A longer essay will follow — interviews, maps, and photographs, shown as families agree they should be shown.
